Momos at Momos

Our friend Vik says that there is a very big street food scene in India. He says that because people work really hard, closing their businesses late, the weekend is some of the only time they have to go out with their friends and families and enjoy a meal. This is why, eateries that operate side by side, on the streets tend to be busy over the weekend.

The compound opposite Kampala Parents in Naguru is making an attempt at creating that. There are a number of restaurants serving Indian food, some have Chinese, and some serve things like your good old chips. The best thing, okay, one of the best things about entering the place is the aromas of the curries that great you. Even our dusty Kampala, could not dampen them. On this day, we had Momos, at a restaurant simply and aptly named, Momos.

As Adrienne would say, Alright my friends, let’s dive in.

Sight

If you have had dumplings before, Momos look a bit like that. They also follow the same concept that is Samosas, pierogis or if you went to a government primary school , Bikepele. That is, meats or/and vegetables wrapped in dough and fried. Here, you can have your Momos either fried or steamed. We went for fried.

The major difference between Momos and their close cousin Dumplings is that they have a thicker dough. And while dumplings tend to be served with soy based sauces, momos come with a tomato based sauce.

Taste

Momos the restaurant serves quite a number of variations but I can not be the only one who thinks that the chicken and cheese are the best. For 12,000shs, you get 6 fried Momos. (That’s another thing about Indian street food, it is affordable. For about 10k we got 4 chicken drumsticks. Try to order this at any other restaurant and you will see.)

Momos are chewy, spicey and just all round delicious. They are also deceptively filling. I say deceptively because I had gone ahead and ordered a second, vegetarian option. Sweet corn and…I think it was Sweet corn and cheese but there was no cheese in my momos. As I was saying, I say deceptively because I ordered another dish and couldn’t finish it. I packed 3 of them which I enjoyed very much when I got home.

The sweet corn filled Momos were…interesting. They were spicy but very minimally so. It was hard to pin down what it was that made them so interesting. But I would definitely order them again and I will. I must investigate what it is about them. When I got home however, when they had cooled down, they were no longer interesting, they were just normal. Eat them hot.

Smell

Another thing I loved about these little cuties is that they almost have no smell. This allows the party to happen in your mouth and sometimes that’s just what you want from your food.

Touch

They come hot. Approach with caution.

Sound

Well there is some construction going on in the neighbourhood so that was the soundtrack to our meal.

Order this if you are looking for comfort food that will be yummy for your tummy and kind on your wallet. The service is also really nice and they have a pot of tea for just 5k. More on my tea obsession another day.
